This Dallmeyer Bergheim Soft Focus no. 1 lens is a brass lens of some historical importance. It was produced using chromatic and spherical aberration to create an all-over soft focus effect popularized by 19th century portrait photographers and pictorialists, without the distortion of most other soft focus designs, thus revolutionizing the soft focus capabilities of portraitists. The lens is composed of two single, uncorrected lenses, the distance between which is not adjustable on this particular version of the lens. The degree of diffusion is controlled by the aperture, which is installed via waterhouse stops in a small slot in the lens behind the front element.
The Bergheim no.1 was intended as a telephoto lens for use with "cabinet" size plates and negatives, which translates to about 4x5 coverage in modern contexts. The 20 inch (508mm) focal length equivalent on 35mm would be about 135mm. In our brief testing it appears this lens has an image circle large enough to cover 5x7 cameras.
With wood cap, homemade drop-in aperture marked "f11"
